How APEX MLB Works
Six engines produce a single per-game APEX Signal Strength composite. Each engine reads one specific angle of the game. Every score on the site comes from these six numbers, aggregated in a way we can explain.
APEX Signal Strength
0 – 10
The single headline number on every game card. Computed as the direction-agnostic mean intensity across whichever of the six engines have data for the game, multiplied by 10. Intensity treats extremes symmetrically: a UZX reading of 7.5 (K-friendly umpire) and a UZX reading of 3.5 (hitter-friendly umpire) both count the same in the composite — either extreme is a strong read.
Minimum threshold: the composite only renders once at least 3 of 6 engines have populated data for the game. Early-day games where only PIX has ingested show engine cards individually but hide the composite until the pipeline catches up.
Direction is intentionally dropped in the composite. Direction is prop-scoped — a "hitter-friendly" reading only matters once you're looking at a specific bet. Each engine card on the game detail page renders its individual reading with signed direction (e.g. "strong read · +42%") so you can interpret direction per-engine yourself.

Environmental Factor Index
Quantifies the environmental factors — park, umpire, weather — that shift every batter and pitcher prop before player skill enters the equation.
Higher = more hitter-friendly game environment.
Compositional: park (±2.0) + umpire (±1.75) + weather (±1.25), each independently capped. Rarely reaches the extreme ends of the −5/+5 scale even when one sub-factor is maxed — a hitter-friendly park like Coors alone can only push the total so far without cooperation from umpire and weather.
UZX

Umpire Zone Index
Quantifies how the home-plate umpire's zone tendencies shift K and BB outcomes for both pitchers and hitters this game. Feeds PIX + HIX as a shared signal — umpire is the one variable that touches every plate appearance.
Higher = K-friendly umpire.
BFX

Bullpen Fatigue Index
Quantifies each team's bullpen availability and effectiveness for this specific game — the most consistently underpriced factor in late-inning and total run props.
Higher = healthier, more available bullpen.
PIX

Pitcher Intelligence Index
Projects the starting pitcher's true performance for this specific game — opponent lineup, park, umpire, days rest, spin trends, platoon splits — without leaning on ERA or W/L record which mask reality.
Higher = tougher matchup for opposing hitters.
HIX

Hitter Intelligence Index
Projects each starting position player's true production for this specific game — vs this specific pitcher, in this specific park, at this lineup position, with this recent form — without leaning on batting average.
Higher = better projected offensive spot.
MIX

Matchup Intelligence Index
Projects the specific batter-vs-pitcher matchup — pitch type interaction, platoon advantage, zone matchup, and career sample when large enough — as a composite that overlays HIX and PIX to reflect what neither individual score captures alone.
Higher = better spot for the batter.
